Hallmarking
What is hallmarking?
A hallmark is an official mark that confirms the precious metal content of jewellery. It ensures that a piece meets recognised quality standards.
Do all pieces carry a hallmark?
In the United Kingdom, jewellery is only required to be hallmarked above certain weight limits. For sterling silver, this is 7.78 grams, meaning many delicate pieces are legally exempt.
What does 925 silver mean?
925 silver, also known as sterling silver, means the piece contains 92.5% pure silver. It is the standard used in quality silver jewellery.
Why don’t some pieces have a 925 stamp?
Some smaller or more delicate designs may not carry a visible stamp due to their size. This is common in fine jewellery and does not affect the quality of the piece.
